People and Portraits in Oils
Fridays 1:00-2:30
Starting Friday 17th January 2025
12 week term with a break for half term
Taught by Amanda Turner
‘There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people’ - Vincent van Gogh.
People are one of the most popular subject matters in art. To capture the essence of a person in art is something very special indeed. In this new course, we’ll be learning the fundamentals of oil painting, but with a special emphasis on people and portraiture. Suitable for all abilities and levels of experience, the course will guide you through the essential aspects of oil painting, including understanding art supplies, mastering colour theory and colour mixing, and appreciating the importance of values.
Each term will be divided into two distinct sections. The first part is dedicated to experimentation and learning, where you will build a solid foundation in oil painting techniques as well as exploring how various renowned artists have approached portraiture and figure painting. The second part provides an opportunity to focus on your own portrait project. Whether it’s a self-portrait, a painting of a loved one, or a depiction of a stranger, Amanda will be on hand with practical tips to help with your artistic development and bring out your own unique style.
We provide all necessary art supplies, so you can focus entirely on your creativity. However, we do advise that when you paint your more focussed pieces it may be a good idea to purchase your own paints so you can work at home.
By the end of each term, you will have created your own portrait/figurative oil painting and will be equipped with a wealth of new techniques and methods. Come develop your oil painting skills in a supportive and inspiring learning environment.
