22nd February 2025
Saturday
10:00-4:00
Adult workshop
(but GCSE and A-Level students are very welcome to book too. It will be a great skills workshop for those taking art)
Workshop Description: Blue and White: Oils for Beginners
Discover the timeless beauty of blue and white china through oil painting with local artist Amanda Turner, a regular tutor at Beth Morris Workshops. This workshop is designed for complete beginners, and will guide you through the essentials of working with water-mixable oil paints as you create your own elegant mock-up of a decorative plate.
Inspired by the timeless beauty of Delft china in this workshop, we’ll paint on round wooden boards that evoke the classic look of Delft plates. Using oil paints exclusively in shades of blue, we'll create simple yet elegant images of apples and leafy branches, celebrating the beauty of nature. Vintage charm with a modern twist!
We’ll focus on the play of light and shadow to bring our apples to life, capturing form and depth through value alone. Together, we’ll explore the subtle shadows and highlights that transform a flat image into a dimensional form, allowing you to experience the power of a monochromatic palette.
Amanda will introduce techniques for painting with a simple yet striking palette of blue and white, and you’ll learn image-transfer methods to bring intricate nature-inspired designs onto a round canvas. By the end of the day, you’ll not only have a beautiful blue and white piece to take home but also a solid foundation in oil painting basics.
