Workshop Description:

People and their Stories: Illustrative stitched portraits - Hand Stitch

This 2 day workshop with Sue Stone will introduce you to creating illustrative, stitched portraits using hand stitch and appliqué. Sue’s teaching style is one of individual, personal tuition throughout the workshop which is suitable for all abilities. Sue will start by guiding you through the straightforward techniques that she uses in her own work and you will have access to Sue’s personal handling samples to use as inspiration.

The workshop will include:

  • How to transform your own drawings or photos into a starting point for a stitched piece

  • How to get started using uncomplicated methods of image transfer to fabric

  • Drawing with simple stitches, such as backstitch and running stitch

  • Using sampling to help decide on techniques and designs

  • Exploring appliqué techniques

  • How to add simple background details such as text to help to tell your subject’s story.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have begun a small portrait to continue at home, and will be equipped with skills to develop your own figurative work further.

Pre-Workshop Preparation:

Materials and fabrics will be provided but you may find a deeper connection to your work if you bring some of your own pieces. The aim of the workshop is for you to produce work that is personal to you so It’s also helpful if you choose colours that you love and which suit your starting image.

Please bring a selection of your own drawings or photographs to use as inspiration. Guidelines for selecting and adapting suitable images will be sent to you prior to workshop. Your subject can be real or imaginary; known or unknown to you. Each picture has its own story to tell.

Artist / Maker / Tutor:

Sue Stone is an acclaimed textile artist known for her figurative, textural compositions with narrative depth. Drawing from life’s experiences—what she sees, hears, and observes—Sue’s work intertwines past and present, evoking a journey through life. Her pieces range from whimsical scenes of imagined people and places to intimate self-portraits and explorations of serious themes.

Sue’s techniques centre on a limited but expressive vocabulary of hand embroidery stitches, complemented by machine stitching, appliqué, and occasionally acrylic paint. This minimalist approach gives her work both simplicity and complexity. A Goldsmiths College graduate, Sue initially worked as a clothing designer before returning to stitch in 2003 as a full-time artist. She has led workshops across the UK, France, the USA, and Canada, as well as online for textileartist.org. Her work has been widely exhibited in the UK and Europe and in the USA, Pakistan, Japan, China, and Australia. She is an Honorary Exhibiting Member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists, Fellow of the UK Society of Designer Craftsmen, and member of the European Textile Network.

Words from Sue:

”Touch is central to why I work with textiles; I love the direct contact with cloth, the slow building of an image through stitch and the connection formed as needle and thread move through the fabric.”

“I believe that passing on skills, sharing my knowledge, and expressing my enthusiasm for my discipline are as important to my practice as creating the work itself.”
